Curiosity, Cause & Connection

Kids are inherently curious. Sometimes, as parents, we don't understand the cause of this continuous flow of curiosity. We don't connect with them. This connection is crucial for a healthy, fulfilling childhood, and a healthy, constructive parenthood. Can we do something to help the quality of our connection?

I wrote a post about falling in love with questions. I talked about how we need to embrace the inherent curiosity the kids possess. What we also came across was a sure-shot possibility of not knowing the answers. How many parents have you come across who hush their kids due to the embarrassment it causes when they don't know an answer... or when they know the answer but can't bring themself to answer because of hesitation, or shame. Not all questions are easy to respond to.

Guess what? Your response need not be an answer all the time.

It could be a plea... "Later please, in private." (buys you some time)

It could be an explanation... "I know the answer, but I would have to think the best way to tell it to you, so I don't confuse you." (Don't underestimate the brownie points you get for being honest)

It could be a question... "What do you think the answer is?" (This will give you a better understanding of their question, and their current level of understanding)

It could be acceptance... "You know what? I actually know the answer to your question, but sometimes grown-ups feel a little shy or embarrassed to share it. Give me some time and I will get back, I promise." (demonstrates honesty and vulnerability, showing children that it's okay to acknowledge our feelings)

It could be partial delegation... "You've asked such a brilliant question that I think you're ready to find the answer yourself! How about we do some research together? I'll guide you, and together we can uncover the fascinating truth." (encourages independence, critical thinking, and self-reliance)

Which would be your favorite? Can you think of a couple more?

If I look at the date of my last post, it appears as if I blinked and 2 months were gone.

I had targeted at least 3-4 posts per month. But I didn't expect much from the month of March - It's the birthday month after all. Three out of four family members have birthdays falling from Feb end to the mid of March. And then there was a wedding in the family too. I had to pull together a party in a couple of days after coming from the wedding. It was such chaos!

Please consider sharing the post with others and your comments encourage me to continue bringing more posts to you - so don't forget to leave one.
